Worked example

What a Result Looks Like: Three Project Management Tools

We checked asana.com against monday.com and clickup.com on 17 September 2026, the way Asana would if it ran the checker.

DomainMentionsGoogleChatGPTShareRank
asana.com38,59936,2922,30751.2%1 of 3
monday.com24,26123,47678532.2%2 of 3
clickup.com12,5929,5043,08816.7%3 of 3

The three domains had 75,452 mentions between them. Asana had 38,599, so its share is 38,599 divided by 75,452, or 51.2%. ClickUp had the fewest mentions overall but the most in ChatGPT answers, 3,088 against Asana's 2,307, which is why the Google and ChatGPT columns are worth reading separately. The sites those answers cited most were youtube.com, asana.com itself, and monday.com. These numbers move over time, and yours will too.

What it measures

What This AI Visibility Checker Measures, and What It Does Not

It answers one question: when AI answers a question, does it point to your site, and how often compared with the competitors you name? For each domain it counts mentions in two places, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, for searches in the United States in English. An answer counts as a mention of a domain when it cites that domain as a source, or when the domain is in the search results the answer was built from. The counts come from DataForSEO's LLM Mentions data.

Those two are the only AI answers it covers. It does not check Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, or Google's AI Mode. It covers only the United States in English, and it does not show the prompts behind the answers or what they say about you.

It also does not tell you whether AI can read your site. That is a separate question with separate fixes: crawler access, content that only appears after JavaScript runs, and structured data. Our free AI SEO audit checks those. A site can pass every check in the audit and still get no mentions here, and a site with plenty of mentions can still have crawl problems. Running both tells you which problem you have.

Why it happens

Why Your Brand Is Missing From AI Answers

When a domain gets few or no mentions, one of four causes is usually behind it, and more than one can apply at once.

  • AI crawlers are turned away

If your robots.txt or your firewall blocks crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) or Googlebot (Google AI Overviews), the systems behind these answers cannot read your pages, so they cite pages they can read.

  • Your content is not in the HTML

A page that loads its text with JavaScript can look close to empty to a crawler that does not run scripts. The answer then draws on a competitor page that serves its text directly.

  • Nobody else backs you up

AI answers lean on sources other than the brand itself, such as forums, review sites, comparison articles, and documentation. A brand that only describes itself on its own site gives an answer little to cite. The sources list in your result shows which sites carry that weight for the domains you entered.

  • The answer comes from lists you are not on

Questions like “best software for a small team” are often answered from roundup articles. If those roundups name your competitors and leave you out, the answer tends to do the same.

Reading the number

How to Read Your Share Number

Your share is your mentions divided by the total mentions of every domain you entered, to one decimal place. Rank orders the domains by their raw counts, so two domains can both show 0.1% and still hold different ranks.

The share belongs to the set you chose. Add a much larger competitor and your share falls, even if nothing about your own visibility changed. It is not a score out of 100, and it is not the percentage of answers that name you, because the data counts mentions and does not say how many answers were read.

It is also a snapshot. The same check a month later, against the same competitors, tells you more than any single reading, because then you can see a direction. In the sets we have measured, mentions in Google AI Overviews far outnumber mentions in ChatGPT, so a small ChatGPT count is common and is not a problem on its own.

Next steps

What to Do About a Low AI Visibility Share

Start with the sources list under your result. It shows the sites AI cites most often for the domains you entered, and marks yours and your competitors'. A forum, review site, or comparison article near the top with few or none of your mentions is the most direct place to earn a mention.

Then rule out the technical causes above: check that your robots.txt lets AI crawlers in, and that your important pages serve their text in the HTML. The free audit linked above checks both.

After that the work is slower: getting mentioned on the sites those answers already trust, and publishing pages that answer your buyers' questions plainly. One check cannot show you whether that work is paying off.

This is also where the checker stops. It cannot tell you which prompts your buyers use, why a competitor gets cited where you do not, or what to fix first. Those are the questions an AI search audit call answers.
