How the score is worked out
The free scan scores a site out of 100: 25 points for each of four questions, less a fixed amount for each gap, by the impact of the fix.
Four questions, 25 points each
- 1 Reach
Can AI get in?
Whether robots.txt lets the AI crawlers in, and whether the site has a sitemap and an llms.txt.
- 2 Read
Can AI read your pages?
Whether the copy is in the HTML before any JavaScript runs, and whether the page has one H1, headings in order, a language and a canonical.
- 3 Recognise
Does AI know who you are?
Whether Organization markup names the company with a contact point, an address and its profiles, and whether a link preview is set.
- 4 Answer
Can AI answer buyer questions?
For a shop: product markup with price and availability, returns, shipping and reviews. For any other site: a pricing page an assistant can read. For both: FAQ markup.
What a gap costs
Every gap the scan finds comes with the fix for it, and each fix is rated by how much it changes what an assistant can do with your site. A question loses points for each fix that belongs to it, once, however many checks that fix covers:
| Impact of the fix | Points lost |
|---|---|
| high | 15 |
| medium | 8 |
| low | 3 |
| A failed check no fix covers | 3 |
A question never drops below 0. For example, a question with one medium-impact fix and one failed check no fix covers scores 25 - 8 - 3 = 14 out of 25. The four questions add up to the score out of 100.
The bands
| Score | Band |
|---|---|
| 90 and up | Strong |
| 70 to 89 | Ready |
| 40 to 69 | Partly ready |
| 0 to 39 | Not ready |
The comparison
"Higher than X% of the N sites scanned" compares your score with the latest homepage scan of every other site we have scanned, scored the same way. It appears once at least 30 sites have been scanned.
What is deliberately not counted
- Facts we report without judging them: how much of the text is your own copy rather than navigation, how many links the homepage has, and the platform the site runs on.
- A missing robots.txt. With none, every crawler is let in, so it is not a gap for assistants.
- The page housekeeping in the scan's check list: viewport, charset, favicon, image alt text and the Twitter card. They matter, but not to whether an assistant can use your site.
- Anything the free scan does not measure: every link across the site, how often AI answers name you, real-user speed and Domain Rating.
