How it works
Three numbers decide what SEO is worth to you
Your organic visits now, and the extra visits a month once the work reaches full strength.
Rankings arrive on an S-curve: slow for a quarter, steep from month 6, close to full by month 12.
Conversion rate times what a customer is worth over their whole time with you.
The first three months
Why SEO looks small at month 3 and big at month 12
New pages have to be crawled, indexed and trusted before they rank, and most of that happens after the work is done. Ahrefs' 2025 study found that only 1.74% of newly published pages reach the top 10 within a year, and that the average page in position one is five years old. So the calculator puts about 5% of the extra traffic in month 3 and about 80% in month 12, for a site that already ranks for some terms.
- Months 1 to 3: research, technical fixes, and the first pages published and indexed.
- Months 4 to 6: first rankings, page two, then page one for the easier terms.
- Months 7 to 12: most pages reach their positions and traffic climbs fastest.
- From month 12: traffic holds, and every customer won keeps paying or buying while new ones join.
What a customer is worth
Every customer counts at their lifetime value
The calculator counts each customer SEO wins at what they will pay you over their whole time with you, in the month you win them. That is how paid acquisition is judged too, so the two compare like for like.
New pages mostly bring people who are still researching, and they buy less often than the visitors you have today. So the calculator counts traffic to new pages at half your conversion rate, and traffic to the pages we improve at your full rate, because those are usually the pages that already sell.
- SaaS: revenue per customer each month, for as long as they stay. At 3% monthly churn that is about 33 months, capped at 36 months.
- Ecommerce: average order value times the orders a customer places over their lifetime.
