AI Shopping Assistant
PublishedDefinition
An AI shopping assistant is software built on a large language model that helps people find, compare, and buy products through conversation instead of keywords and filters. You describe what you need in plain words, and it asks follow-up questions, narrows thousands of products to a few picks, explains each one, and links to where you can buy it.
Some go a step further and complete the purchase for you. This entry follows the companies' own pages as they read on October 6, 2026.
There are two kinds, and they matter to your store in different ways. One lives inside a single retailer, like Amazon's Alexa for Shopping or Walmart's Sparky. The other recommends products from across the web, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode. The second kind decides whether your products are in the shortlist at all.
How an AI Shopping Assistant Works
An AI shopping assistant turns a request into a shortlist in three moves: it works out what you want, it pulls product data, and it ranks what it finds. OpenAI's shopping help article documents the data and ranking steps for ChatGPT.
- It reads a request like "the quietest cordless stick vacuum for a small apartment" and asks about budget or must-haves when the request is vague.
- It draws on structured product data (price, description, availability) from merchants and third-party providers, plus other public product pages.
- It picks the products that fit and orders the sellers. ChatGPT ranks merchants on availability, price, quality, and whether they make or primarily sell the item.
The data behind it is large. Google says its AI Mode runs on the Shopping Graph, which holds more than 50 billion product listings, 2 billion of them updated every hour.
ChatGPT's deeper mode, shopping research, launched on November 24, 2025. OpenAI's help article on shopping research says it reads product pages directly, cites its sources, avoids low-quality or spammy sites, and ends with "a small set of top picks".
Two Kinds of AI Shopping Assistant
The difference is whose shelf the assistant shops. An in-store assistant only knows one retailer's catalog. An independent assistant compares products and sellers across the web.
In-store assistants live inside one retailer's app or site:
- Amazon: Rufus launched in beta on February 1, 2024, trained on Amazon's catalog and information from across the web. On May 13, 2026, Amazon combined Rufus and Alexa+ into Alexa for Shopping, available to US customers in the Amazon app, on the website, and on Echo Show.
- Walmart: Sparky arrived on June 6, 2025 behind an "Ask Sparky" button in the Walmart app. Walmart says it finds items, sums up reviews, and suggests products for an occasion.
- Your own store: Many vendors sell a chat assistant you install on your site, trained on your catalog and policies. It helps visitors who are already there.
Independent assistants recommend products from many stores:
- ChatGPT: Shows product results with images, details, and links to sellers when a question signals shopping intent. Shopify merchants are already connected through Shopify Catalog. The ChatGPT Shopping guide covers how it picks products in detail.
- Perplexity: Its shopping experience is free to all US users, remembers past searches, and checks out through PayPal while the retailer stays merchant of record.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini: On November 13, 2025, Google rolled out conversational shopping in AI Mode, shopping in the Gemini app, and agentic checkout from US merchants including Wayfair, Chewy, and Quince.
AI Shopping Assistant vs. Chatbot vs. AI Shopping Agent
The three terms overlap, and vendors use them loosely. The useful line is what the software is allowed to do.
- Chatbot: Answers questions from a script or a help center, such as delivery times or return rules. It does not choose products for you.
- AI shopping assistant: Understands a need, recommends specific products, and explains why. You still decide and pay.
- AI shopping agent: Takes actions for you. Amazon's Buy For Me feature lets the assistant buy items from other online stores on a customer's behalf, and Google's agentic checkout offers to buy a tracked item on the merchant's site once its price falls within your budget and you confirm.
"AI personal shopper" usually means the same thing as an AI shopping assistant, with more emphasis on taste and style.
Why AI Shopping Assistants Matter for Your Store
Shoppers already use them at scale. Amazon says Rufus was used by more than 300 million customers in 2025 and helped deliver nearly $12 billion in incremental annualized sales, in its fourth-quarter 2025 results.
Traffic from independent assistants is growing fast from a small base. According to Adobe, traffic to US retail sites from generative AI tools rose 693.4% year over year across the 2025 holiday season (November 1 to December 31). Adobe also notes that "the base of users remains modest".
Three things follow for your store:
- The shortlist is short. An assistant returns a handful of picks, and if your product is not among them, that shopper does not see it.
- You cannot buy your way into the picks. OpenAI says ChatGPT's product results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads". Paid placements are a separate product, covered in ChatGPT Ads.
- Your own chat widget does not help here. An assistant on your site serves visitors you already have, and it does not put your products into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Mode answers.
How Your Products Get Recommended
Independent assistants pick from the product data they can reach and trust. Five things decide whether yours is in that pool, each taken from what the assistants document.
- Let the crawlers in. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check your robots.txt against the AI crawler reference.
- Make product data complete and machine-readable. Price, availability, description, and variants should be on the product page, in structured data, and in any feed you share. ChatGPT reads structured metadata from merchants and third parties.
- Keep price and stock accurate. Availability and price are two of ChatGPT's documented merchant ranking factors, and OpenAI warns that updates can show up with a delay.
- Earn third-party coverage. ChatGPT weighs third-party content alongside merchant data, and its shopping research reads public retail sites. Perplexity says its product cards show "the specs and reviews needed to say yes or no", so your reviews travel with your product.
- Measure it. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode the shopping questions your buyers ask, and ask each more than once. Across the 368 prompts we run 10 or more times, the most-named brand appeared in 50.9% of that prompt's runs (RankZero data, 96,720 AI answers, June to September 2026), so a single check tells you little.
Each assistant has its own rules on top of these. The ChatGPT Shopping guide covers feeds and merchant listings, and the Perplexity SEO guide covers how Perplexity chooses sources.

FAQ
Is ChatGPT an AI shopping assistant?
Yes, when a question signals shopping intent. ChatGPT then shows product results with images, details, and links to sellers, and its shopping research mode builds a guide with a small set of top picks.
It is an independent assistant, so it compares products from many stores rather than one retailer's catalog.
What happened to Amazon Rufus?
Amazon combined Rufus with Alexa+ on May 13, 2026, and the result is called Alexa for Shopping. It is available to US customers in the Amazon app, on the website, and on Echo Show devices.
Amazon says Rufus helped more than 300 million customers in 2025.
Do AI shopping assistants show ads?
Some do, but separately from the recommendations. OpenAI says ChatGPT's product results are not ads and are not influenced by its partnerships, and that ads are shown apart from them.
How those paid placements work is covered in our ChatGPT Ads entry.
Can an AI shopping assistant buy things for me?
Some can. Amazon's Buy For Me feature completes purchases from other online stores, Google's agentic checkout can buy a tracked item once the price fits your budget and you confirm, and Perplexity checks out through PayPal.
ChatGPT may show an Instant Checkout option for some eligible products and merchants. Otherwise, you finish the purchase on the seller's site.
Does my store need its own AI shopping assistant?
That is a separate decision from being recommended. An on-site assistant can help visitors who already reached your store.
Being picked by ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Mode depends on your product data, crawler access, and reputation across the web. The ecommerce AI search service is where we do that work for stores.
