Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
PublishedDefinition
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand named, and ideally cited with a link, inside the answers AI systems write. The prize is a place in the answer itself: one of the few brands named when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews a question.
AEO, GEO (generative engine optimization), and LLMO (large language model optimization) are overlapping names for the same work. They were coined at different times for different interfaces, and none of them changes what you do.
What Counts as an Answer Engine
An answer engine replies to a question with one written answer instead of a page of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews all work this way, and so do voice assistants that read a single answer aloud.
That format is why the discipline exists. A results page shows 10 options and lets the reader choose. An answer has already chosen, and it usually names only a handful of brands.
How these systems retrieve sources and assemble the answer is covered in the AI search engine entry.
AEO, GEO, and LLMO: Three Names for One Job
The labels come from different moments, which is most of the reason there are three of them:
- AEO is the oldest. A 2018 brightonSEO talk was already titled A Universal Strategy for Answer Engine Optimisation, when the answer to win was a featured snippet or the single reply a voice assistant reads out.
- GEO comes from research. A November 2023 paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, named the practice of making content more visible in the responses generative engines write. It was accepted to KDD 2024.
- LLMO names the model instead of the interface. Large language model optimization describes the same goal from the layer underneath, and it has its own entry under LLM optimization.
We use AI SEO as the umbrella for all three. The practices do not split by label: answer-first pages, a consistent description of your brand, and corroboration on other sites serve every one of these engines.
What AEO Work Covers
At the level of a definition, the work has four parts:
- Answer-first pages: Each page states its answer in the opening lines, so a passage can be quoted without rewriting. Building pages this way is content engineering.
- One consistent description of your brand: Your site, your listings, and the third-party pages about you should say the same thing about what you do and who it is for.
- Presence on the sources answers already cite: Answer engines weigh what trusted sites say about you, not only what you say about yourself.
- A tracked set of buyer prompts: You check, on a schedule, whether the answers to the questions your buyers ask name you and link to you.
AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it, and GEO vs SEO sets out how the two fit together. The steps themselves, in order, are in the complete AI SEO guide.
How AEO Is Measured
AEO is measured in answers, not rankings. Two numbers matter most: how often answers to your tracked prompts name you, and how often they cite your pages as a source, which is an AI citation.
Your own analytics add a third, the sessions that arrive from AI referrers.
Any single answer can change between runs, so read the trend across the whole prompt set rather than one check on one prompt. RankZero tracks prompts daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, with Claude on request.
Getting AEO Done for You
RankZero runs AEO as a done-for-you service for B2B SaaS and ecommerce brands, covering technical fixes, answer-shaped content, earned citations, and the tracking above.
The AEO and GEO service page covers what the program includes, and it is where you book a call.
