# AI Overview (/glossary/ai-overview)

An AI Overview is an AI-written summary that Google shows at the top of the results page for some searches. It answers the question in a short passage of text and links to the web pages that support it. Google calls it [a snapshot of key information about a topic or question](https://search.google/ways-to-search/ai-overviews/), with links to explore further on the web.

AI Overviews, plural, is the name of the feature. An AI Overview is the single summary on one results page. You will also see it called a Google AI Overview or an AI summary.

For your brand, the summary sits above the regular results, and the pages it links are the ones credited with the answer. Whether your page is among them is now part of being visible on Google.

## What an AI Overview Contains

An AI Overview has two parts: a written answer, and links to the pages that support it.

The answer is short. In [Pew Research Center's study of 900 U.S. adults' Google searches](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/), the typical AI summary was 67 words long. The shortest ran to seven words and the longest to 369.

The links are how sources get credit. In the same study, 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources, and 1% cited a single one. A link to your page inside the summary is an [AI citation](/glossary/ai-citation).

## How an AI Overview Is Generated

Google produces an AI Overview in three steps, all inside ordinary Google Search:

1. Google decides whether to show one. [Its guidance for site owners](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says AI Overviews show only when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, so they often do not trigger.
2. Google gathers supporting pages. It can run several related searches across subtopics for one question, which Google calls query fan-out.
3. A Gemini model writes the answer. Google [customized a Gemini model for Search](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/) to do this, and the answer links to the pages behind it.

The supporting pages are ordinary Google results. A page has to be indexed, and able to show in Search with a snippet, before the summary can link to it.

Other AI search engines work in a similar way. The [AI search engine](/glossary/ai-search-engine) entry covers the shared mechanics.

## When Google Shows an AI Overview

Most searches do not get an AI Overview. In Pew's data, 18% of Google searches in March 2025 produced an AI summary.

The wording of the search made a clear difference in that study:

* Searches that began with a question word such as who, what, when, or why produced an AI summary 60% of the time.
* Searches of 10 words or more produced one 53% of the time.
* Searches of one or two words produced one 8% of the time.

AI Overviews are not limited to the U.S. Since May 2025, they have been [available in more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages](https://blog.google/products/search/ai-overview-expansion-may-2025-update/).

## AI Overview vs. Featured Snippet, AI Mode, and SGE

Three other Google terms get mixed up with the AI Overview:

* **Featured snippet:** a passage taken from one page and shown above that page's link. Google describes it as [a regular search result reversed, with the descriptive snippet first](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/featured-snippets). An AI Overview is new text, written from several pages.
* **AI Mode:** Google's conversational search, suited to follow-up questions and complex comparisons. An AI Overview is one answer on the results page, and on mobile it can hand you on to AI Mode. Google notes the two may use different models, so the pages they link will vary. The [Google AI Mode SEO guide](/guides/google-ai-mode-seo) covers it.
* **SGE:** Search Generative Experience, the [Search Labs experiment Google announced on May 10, 2023](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-search/). AI Overviews came out of that experiment, and Google began rolling them out to everyone in the U.S. on May 14, 2024. The [Search Generative Experience](/glossary/search-generative-experience) entry has the background.

## How Accurate an AI Overview Is

AI Overviews get things wrong, and Google says so. Its help page states that [AI Overviews can and will make mistakes](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/14901683?hl=en).

The best-known cases came in the first weeks after launch. One summary answered a search about how many rocks to eat, and another passed on a forum tip about using glue to make cheese stick to pizza.

In [its account of those errors](https://blog.google/products/search/ai-overviews-update-may-2024/), Google says the feature is built to show only information backed up by top web results. It traced the two cases to satire and forum content, and has since limited both. It also says it aims not to show AI Overviews for hard news.

Google's own advice is to check anything important in more than one place, starting with the links in the overview. For your brand, that means reading what the summary says about you, and which pages it took that from.

## What AI Overviews Mean for Your Website

An AI Overview often settles the question on the results page. In Pew's study, people who saw an AI summary clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, against 15% for people who saw none. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.

Google reads the same shift differently. Its guidance for site owners says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning those visitors are more likely to spend more time on the site.

Either way, the links inside the summary are worth competing for. Where to go next depends on what you need:

* To see whether a single query triggers an AI Overview today, and which pages it cites, run it through the [free AI Overview checker](/tools/ai-overview-checker).
* To follow how often AI Overviews cite your brand, and which searches trigger them, use the [Google AI Overviews tracker](/trackers/ai-overviews).
* To earn the citation, work through the [Google AI Overview SEO guide](/guides/google-ai-overview-seo).

  <Accordion title="What is an AI Overview?" id="what-are-overviews">
    An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google shows at the top of the results page for some searches. It answers the question in a short passage and links to the pages that support it.

    It is part of Google Search itself. Google calls it a core Search feature, like knowledge panels.

  <Accordion title="Can you turn off AI Overviews?" id="turn-off-overviews">
    No. Google's [help page for AI Overviews](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/14901683?hl=en) says they are a core Search feature and that features cannot be turned off.

    There is a workaround for a single search. Select the Web filter after you search, and Google shows only text links, with no AI Overview.

  <Accordion title="Do ads appear in AI Overviews?" id="ads-in-overviews">
    Yes. Google says ads are [eligible to show above, below, or within AI Overviews](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775?hl=en).

    An ad inside the overview has to be relevant to both the search and the overview's content. Those ads come from existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I get my brand into AI Overviews?" id="get-into-overviews">
    Start with eligibility. The page has to be indexed and able to show in Google Search with a snippet, and the site must not be excluded through the [Search generative AI control](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16908024) in Search Console, where include is the default. Google says you do not need special schema, new markup, or an AI text file to appear.

    Eligibility only gets a page considered. What makes Google cite it, and the steps to get there, are in the [guide to getting cited in Google AI Overviews](/guides/google-ai-overview-seo).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How do I track if my brand appears in AI Overviews?" id="track-overviews">
    Google Search Console counts AI Overviews inside your overall Web search totals. A click on a link in an AI Overview counts as a click, and [every link in the overview is assigned the same position](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7042828#ai-overviews).

    Search Console also has a [generative AI performance report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16984139), open to every site since August 31, 2026. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode together, grouped by page, country, or device.

    Neither report tells you which searches triggered an AI Overview or whether your brand was named in it. For that you need a tool that reads the results page itself. The [AI search tracking guide](/guides/ai-search-tracking) covers how to set that up.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I keep my content out of AI Overviews?" id="opt-out-overviews">
    Yes, in two ways. For the whole site, the [Search generative AI control](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16908024) in Search Console has an exclude setting. Google says that with it on, links to your site and your content will not appear in Search generative AI features.

    For a single page, use the controls that limit what Google shows from it anywhere in Search: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex. These limit what your regular result shows as well.
